There are countless Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the Internet that you could use to make calls with whoever you want. The question is, which one is the best? To answer that, I’ll give you some points on why I chose Discord as the best one for myself.
What is discord?
Discord is a free software that you could use to communicate with your friends/team members via Text, Audio, and even Video. Discord is available on both PC and Mobile. Just install it on your machine and you’re good to go.
Discord enables users to make text discussions, voice calls, as well as video calls. I like to see it as a hybrid of Reddit and Skype. Or rather, Skype on steroids. Reddit has it’s own subdivision or categories for what kind of people you are. If you’re a gamer, there’s tons of channels for gamers. If you’re someone who loves anime, there’s also channels for that. You just have to look for it.
How does discord perform?
Let’s be honest, everyone hates delays and stutters during voice calls. It makes you go “HUH?” or if you’re polite, “Sorry?”. Sometimes, you pull some of your hair out of your head.
Discord has a variety of servers that you could select depending on your location. As for me, I’d select Singapore or Japan since I’m living in Malaysia. Selecting the nearest server lowers your latency. Hence, lowers your voice chat delay and improves communication quality.
Discord also provides the option to make your own channels. I love this feature since I have a small community for my online audience and also my real life friends. I’d use this feature to make separate channels so I won’t mix up personal and public messages.
what do i use discord for?
Most of the time, I use Discord to communicate with my friends while gaming. I’ve noticed that Discord voice channel has a lower latency than Dota 2‘s voice chat. A small communication delay makes a huge difference in a fast paces games. You could either win or lose because of the communication delay.
Apart from that, I also use Discord for freelance programming projects with my friends. Discord has a feature where you can make video calls and even share screen. Screen sharing is a feature that I use a LOT when programming with my friends since I could see their codes and they also could see mine. You could also use Discord for however you want it! It’s not just for gaming.
All in all, Discord is my go-to software when it comes to communication. It suits me well. I’m glad that my friend introduced me to this platform and now I’m telling you, if you haven’t tried Discord, you should!
